On April 19, 2019, the member units of SCIMEA - the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and Sichuan Cancer Hospital successfully held the “Thoracic Surgery Academic Forum for Cross-Strait Young and Middle-Aged Scholars”. This is the second stop of this academic forum after the exchange on April 18th at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, another member unit of the Medical Promotion Association.

The thoracic surgery experts from Taiwan included professor Fang Fuji from Tainan Municipal Hospital; professor Chen Yingyuan from the National Cheng Kung University Hospital; professor Wang Bingyan from Changhua Christian Hospital; professor Huang Xuzhi from Chung Shan Medical University Hospital; professor Xie Minxiao from Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital; professor Chen Baixi from Mackay Memorial Hospital Hsinchu Branch. The academic exchange on April 19 included featured surgery observations, in-depth comments on surgical video, and panel discussions. Based on research and attention in lung surgery and esophageal surgery at home and abroad, professor Li Qiang, chairman of the Thoracic Surgery Committee of SCIMEA, director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Sichuan Cancer Hospital, and professor Han Yongtao, director of SCIMEA and deputy director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Sichuan Cancer Hospital selected precise segmentectomy, single-hole VATS lung surgery, and preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy plus esophagectomy in treatment of esophageal cancer to share their experience with Taiwanese peers.

At 8 am on the morning of April 19, organized by directors Li Qiang and Han Yongtao of the center, counterparts from Taiwan participated in the morning shift of the thoracic surgery center. Then director Li Qiang introduced the basic situation of the center, and the relevant doctors introduced the basic information of the patients.

Director Li Qiang completed a thoracoscopic S1+S2 accurate segmentectomy on the right upper lobe and a sing-hole thoracoscope right middle lung resection demonstration. It is worth mentioning that with the continuous development and deepening of the precise lung segment, the three-dimensional reconstruction of preoperative pulmonary nodules is becoming more crucial for operation. Through the display of preoperative imaging 3D reconstruction, the experts can also have a more comprehensive and straightforward understanding of the location of the lesion and the precise surgical spot.

Esophageal surgery specialists at the Department of Thoracic Surgery also demonstrated preoperative chemoradiotherapy + operative treatment for locally advanced patients. The patient was diagnosed preoperatively as locally advanced and non-resectable. After the high-level radiotherapy technology support of the Sichuan Cancer Hospital and the preoperative treatment, the surgical evaluation almost reached the clinical complete remission of the tumor lesions, and the primary lesion and metastatic lymph nodes were completely removed by surgery, achieving the best therapeutic effect for the patient.

During the operation, professor Han Yongtao showed his colleagues from Taiwan a smooth radical surgery for esophageal carcinoma of pleuroperitoneal cavity and lymph node dissection.

After the operation, director Li Qiang and deputy director Han Yongtao explained and analyzed the video of the operation. They not only reviewed and explored the key points of the operation, but also answered some questions from the Taiwanese colleagues about the operation strategy, techniques and other details.

This academic discussion also covered rich theoretical basis, experience exchange and case discussion. Professor Peng Lin, professor Fang Qiang, and professor Zhu Jiang from thoracic center also shared their experience on realization approaches and quality control of thoracic laparoscopic radical resection after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced esophageal cancer, accelerated rehabilitation surgery for esophageal cancer, as well as single-hole thoracoscopic segmentectomy. Professor Huang Xuzhi from the Chung Shan Medical University Hospital shared his experience in ground-glass pulmonary nodules over the past three years; professor Chen Baixi from Mackay Memorial Hospital Hsinchu Branch discussed the treatment strategy and technique of single-hole thoracoscopic surgery of relatively rare hepatic pleural effusion; professor Fang Fuji of Tainan Municipal Hospital introduced and summarized the thoracoscopic surgeries in the hospital.7.jpg

The successful holding of the Thoracic Surgery Academic Forum for Cross-Strait Young and Middle-Aged Scholars has promoted the exchange of lung cancer and esophageal cancer diagnosis and treatment strategies and processes in the medical circles of Sichuan Province and Taiwan Province, deepened understanding, and laid the foundation for long-term exchanges and cooperation in the future.
