"West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical CareMedicine 2019" Opened in Chengdu

On November 15th, the "West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical Care Medicine 2019", hosted by Sichuan Preventive Medicine Association, Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association and West China Hospital, Sichuan University and organized by Critical Care Department of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, kicked off at the International Conference Center of Chengdu New International Convention and Exhibition Center.

With the theme of "Advance Core Skills, Focus on Hot Topics" as before, academic exchanges were held regarding critical care theories and skills such as keynote lectures, special forums, group PK-opinion competition, hot topics, case discussions, face-to-face discussions of celebrities from China and the United States, new technology, and new product exhibitions, which attracted more than 2,000 people of medical, nursing, and technical staff, as well as medical management personnel engaged in critical care, anesthesia, and emergency treatment.

The conference was co-chaired by Professor Kang Yan, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, and Professor Daniel R. Brown, director of Executive Committee of Critical Care Medicine, Mayo Clinic. It was intended to focus on hot topics such as the 2019 global critical care medicine trend, latest progress in this field, hot topics and innovative cutting-edge technologies, provide the participating medical practitioners with the leading technology information, strengthen the clinical skills of critical care personnel, update the participants with industry development trends, help medical staff deal with critical care with forward-looking perspective and developing concept, conduct clinical practice with more effective methods and technologies, create opportunities for extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and promote the development of critical care medicine .

The opening ceremony was emceed by Dr. Hu Chenggong and Dr. Liao Xuelian of West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Professor Kang Yan, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Professor Daniel R. Brown, director of Executive Committee of Critical Care Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Professor Li Weimin, president of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Ms. Zhang Mengfan, secretary-general of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, Professor Du Bin, president of Chinese Medical Doctor Association Critical Care Medicine Physician Branch, Professor Guan Xiangdong, director of Chinese Medical Association Critical Care Medicine  Branch, and Song Shigui, deputy director of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province, attended the opening ceremony and presented their respective speeches.

Speech by Professor Kang Yan, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University


Professor Kang Yan, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, first thanked the leaders and experts who have always supported and promoted the development of critical care in West China Hospital. He said that West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical Care Medicine has become one of the most influential comprehensive critical care medicine conferences in China, and foreign experts from Cambridge, Britain and various medical centers in the United States were highly welcome to participate in academic exchanges in China. People engaged in critical care should hold an attitude with open mind, eagerness to learn, and progression. In continuous communication with each other, they can promote the continuous development and progress of critical care and provide better medical services for patients with critical care. He emphasized that "Advance Core Skills, Focus on Hot Topics" is the unchanged purpose of the conference, and he hoped that through this conference, the participants can master cutting-edge information and regulate clinical measures.

Speech by Professor Daniel R. Brown, Director of Executive Committee of Mayo Clinic


Professor Daniel R. Brown, director of Executive Committee for Critical Care Medicine of Mayo Clinic, summarized the progress made in the four years of cooperation with West China Hospital. He mentioned that the quick response team of critical care in West China Hospital has made great progress in mutual visits and study. He said that West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical Care Medicine is very beneficial to the development of critical care medicine on both sides, and both parties are making progress. He was looking forward to the next conference.

Speech by Professor Li Weimin, President of West China Hospital, Sichuan University


Professor Li Weimin, president of West China Hospital, Sichuan University expressed his gratitude to the leaders, experts and medical peers who have helped and supported the development of West China Hospital and Critical Care Medicine in West China Hospital. He said that after 127 years of unremitting efforts, people in West China Hospital have worked together to build the first-class and world-renowned West China Hospital, Sichuan University in China. He affirmed the achievements made by West China Hospital in recent years, especially since the establishment and development of the West China Critical Care Medicine Department in 1992. Based on centralized management, it has established sub-professional divisions including critical breathing, critical circulation, critical trauma, and critical nerves. In the future, it will further build a competitive team of critical care professionals.

Speech by Zhang Mengfan, Secretary-General of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association


In her speech, Ms. Zhang Mengfan, Secretary-General of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, stated that, as the only national medical academic brand named after two of the world ’s top hospitals, West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical Care Medicine will further stimulate scientific research and innovation through a forward-looking perspective and development concept in critical care medicine, broaden the medical vision of medical practitioners, improve the treatment level of medical staff, and achieve the sustainable development of critical care medicine. She also mentioned that as one of the sponsors of the conference, Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, under the leadership of Academician Wei Yuquan of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has always insisted on collaborative innovation. It relies on a comprehensive platform, features differential development, focuses on scientific research capacity building and improvement of medical level, and promotes the whole field development. It is committed to promoting comprehensive, multi-layer, high-level international medical exchanges and cooperation, promoting the formation of a new multi-coverage, comprehensive, and open medical pattern, and helping a new round of booming of the medical and health industry.

Speech by Professor Du Bin, Chairman of Chinese Medical Doctor Association


Professor Du Bin, Chairman of Chinese Medical Doctor Association of Critical Care Medicine Physician Branch, mentioned in his speech that leaders and experts of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of West China Hospital have spared no effort to promote the development of critical care medicine. He hopes that through such examples, more medical staff are willing to devote themselves to critical care, and jointly promote the development of critical care in China.

Professor Guan Xiangdong, director of Chinese Medical Association Critical Care Medicine Branch, delivered a speech. The critical care team at West China Hospital takes a leading position in the country's critical care medicine with continuous efforts and improvement. He pointed out that every year, West China-Mayo International Forum of Critical Care Medicine is committed to promoting the development of critical care by strengthening exchanges at home and abroad, and has achieved fruitful results. He hopes it can continue to deepen the exchange of critical care medicine and promote the vigorous development of critical care disciplines and industry.

Speech by Song Shigui,Deputy Director of Health Commission ofSichuan Province


Song Shigui, deputy director of Health Commission of Sichuan Province, said in his speech that the development of critical care medicine is an important sign of medical progress, a key indicator of the comprehensive medical strength of the hospital, and an important part of modern medicine. They all play an important role in the incident. He believes that the conference will play an active role in expanding critical care, updating development mentality, carrying out cooperation and exchanges, and improving discipline construction.


The conference lasted for three days, and the speeches of the experts at the opening ceremony laid a good foundation for the next main forum and multiple sub forums. In addition, the conference also invited experts in critical care, emergency, respiratory therapy and critical care related positions from Mayo Clinic, which ranks top in the U.S., as well as more than 100 experts from Chinese Medical Association Critical Care Medicine Branch, Critical Care Medicine Physician Division, Professional Committee of Critical Care Medicine, and Chinese Society of Pathophysiology& Chinese Society of Critical Care Medicine at home and abroad. Through topic discussions such as new progress in critical care research, it gave profound inspiration to participants. In the following academic exchanges, well-known experts and professors at home and abroad also shared and interpreted the hottest, latest, and most popular theories and clinical practices in critical care medicine in the global critical care medicine field, so as to dispel the doubts of peers in critical care medicine .
