•The well-established Queensland primary care system: seamless connection and collaboration between GPs and rehabilitation, paramedical service and nursing staff

About the webinar • background

Australia is internationally recognized as a country with an advanced and well-established system of GP education and primary care services. On average, there are 15 general practitioners for every 10,000 Australians (one general practitioner serving 667 people). GP is a separate medical specialty in Australia, providing a full range of medical services to individuals, families and communities. Medical school graduates must accept 3-4 years of special accredited training after their internship and can only become a general practitioner after being certified by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

There are ten government-accredited regional training institutions for GPs in Australia, including James Cook University (JCU), a member of the Queensland Healthcare Professional Development Consortium. JCU was the first university in Australia to be mandated by the Federal Government to provide GP training and is one of the most successful universities in Australia in training senior general practitioners in rural and remote areas.

Australia and China have established a close partnership in the field of GP education. Over the past decade, Australia has provided professional training in GP for hundreds of outstanding Chinese general practitioners. In July 2019, Southern Medical University organized more than 20 GP trainers and managers from seven affiliated hospitals to participate in a two-week "Comprehensive Capacity Building Training Program for General Practitioners" by the Queensland Health.
