The 9th National Academic Forum on Translational Medicine for Major Respiratory Diseases Successfully Held in Chengdu

To further promote basic and clinical research on respiratory diseases, the 9th National Academic Forum on Translational Medicine for Major Respiratory Diseases, hosted by the Special Committee on Respiratory Physiology of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences and organized by Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease of the National Health Commission, was successfully held in Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu from April 9-11, 2021.

The Forum is open to scholars engaged in respiratory physiology, pathophysiology and clinical research, aiming to rapidly and effectively translate the latest achievements of basic research on respiratory diseases into clinical medical practice, and promote communication and cooperation among various entities, and gradually establish a platform for translational medicine of respiratory diseases and a talent training system for translational medicine of major respiratory diseases; nearly 200 well-known experts from home and abroad were invited to this forum, and some domestic and foreign leading experts engaged in the field of basic and clinical respiratory research were specially invited to give keynote speeches.

In the opening speech, Luo Fengming, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, expressed a warm welcome to all the experts present and noted that West China Hospital of Sichuan University has always attached great importance to scientific research. And in recent years, the hospital has given great support in the transformation of scientific & technological achievements and patent application & granting, and has made certain achievements, which are all thanks to the support and help of experts nationwide. He hoped all the experts can share and gain something from this Forum.

Prof. Wang Yun, President of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences, congratulated the holding of the Forum in Chengdu. She pointed out that the growth of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences cannot be achieved without the help of the peers and support units. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, she hoped that more experts from different disciplines will join the Association to contribute to the international development of Chinese physiology and the construction of a healthy China.

Prof. Luo Ziqiang, Vice President of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences, noted that physiology is an all-embracing discipline, where information of various disciplines overlaps and integrates. Through the Forum, platforms can be built for academic exchange and to promote friendships and cooperation among scholars of different research directions, which is of great benefit to basic research in their respective fields.

Prof. Hu Qinghua, Chairman of the Forum, introduced the academic style of this Forum to the participants, which consists of three dimensions: invited speeches, thematic speeches and youth speeches. This Forum not only follows up the academic frontier and theoretical progress, leads and expands academic exchanges, but also builds a source of motivation to carry on the academic development through youth speeches.

In the speech session, the Forum was privileged to have Prof. Li Weimin, President of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, as a special guest, to give a wonderful thematic speech titled “Clinical Difficulties and Research Frontiers of Precision Therapy for Lung Cancer”. President Li explained the relationship between clinical medicine and scientific research from these two dimensions.

The success of every forum means innovation and development, every gathering of peers means expansion and growth, and every clinical translation of scientific research is inseparable from academic leadership and overlapping across different fields, disciplines and directions. It is hoped that the Forum will build free academic and technical exchange platforms for more scientific workers and research institutes in the respiratory field in the future.
