In order to further improve the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases in Sichuan province, discuss the diagnosis and treatment techniques and latest research results of end-stage lung diseases, difficult and rare lung diseases, and lung transplantation, solve the last-link problem for the treatment of end-stage lung diseases, and finally establish a MDT (multidisciplinary team) diagnosis and treatment model for end-stage lung diseases, and provide the whole-chain medical services for the end-stage lung disease patients, the inaugural meeting of Special Committee on MDT for End-Stage Lung Diseases of  Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), sponsored by SCIMEA and organized by West China Hospital of Sichuan University and Sichuan Lung Transplant Alliance, was successfully held in Chengdu on April 21, 2023.

The first item of the inaugural meeting was a report on the preparatory work by Prof. Pu Qiang, one of the initiators of the Special Committee on MDT for End-stage Lung Diseases. Prof. Pu Qiang reported on the background, development purpose, preparation process and distribution of members of the special committee. He explained that lung transplantation in China is characterized by rapid progress, significant difference, asymmetry between the number of lung transplants and the huge population base, low utilization of donor lungs, great technical difficulty in lung transplantation, and a relatively large gap in terms of perioperative medical treatment when compared with international advanced level. Also, he analyzed the problems of insufficient medical resources and professional talent shortage in Sichuan province. He hoped to build a professional academic platform for medical personnel at all levels of medical institutions in Sichuan, to jointly discuss the MDT model for end-stage lung diseases, and to promote the long-term development of lung disease treatment.

Later, Mr. Tong Yubo, Director of Academic Conference Affairs Department of SCIMEA, organized the election of the special committee and read out the results. And the leaders at all levels of the special committee were elected at the scene according to the election provisions in the Articles of Association of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association.

As a result, Prof. Liu Lunxu, Executive Vice President of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, was elected as advisor of the committee, Prof. Liang Zongan of West China Hospital of Sichuan University as honorary chairman, Prof. Pu Qiang as chairman of the committee, 11 comrades including Wang Bo, Du Xinmiao and Mei Jiandong as vice chairmen, 35 comrades including Cao Haiquan and Cao Lianghai as members of the standing committee, and 2 comrades including Tian Dong and Yang Jing as  secretaries.

Prof. Liang Zongan, honorary chairman of the committee, warmly congratulated on the establishment of the committee and delivered a speech. He said that the Specialized Committee on MDT for End-Stage Lung Diseases has absorbed experts from multidisciplinary teams in thoracic surgery, respiratory and critical care medicine, rheumatology and immunology, and intensive care medicine, and is a highly interdisciplinary special committee. Currently, lung transplantation is a very important medical tool to cure end-stage lung disease, but due to its complexity, it requires the cooperation of various disciplines to accomplish. He believed that in the future, under the leadership of Prof. Pu Qiang, we will promote the all-round treatment activities for end-stage lung diseases together by building a professional academic exchange and cooperation platform, and promote the lung transplantation team in Sichuan to the next level.

He expressed his sincere gratitude for the trust and support of his peers, and noted that he would work together with medical peers to jointly center around the core goal of “establishing the MDT model for end-stage lung diseases”, strive to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment techniques and scientific research ability of end-stage lung disease practitioners in Sichuan by strengthening academic exchanges and cooperation among medical institutions at all levels; improve the public’s objective and correct understanding of lung transplantation by carrying out various forms of popular science education and publicity activities; improve the practitioners’ in-depth understanding of lung transplantation by building an academic exchange platform, so that they can provide patients with the whole-chain medical services, and jointly improve the diagnosis and treatment ability for lung diseases in Sichuan.

On April 22, the opening ceremony of the meeting and the plaque-unveiling ceremony of Sichuan Lung Transplantation Alliance was held, and the opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Pu Qiang from West China Hospital of Sichuan University. In his speech, Prof. Liu Lunxu expressed his warm congratulations on the establishment of the Special Committee on MDT for End-Stage Lung Diseases. He hoped by making full use of the industry platform of SCIMEA, we can bring the resource superiority of multidisciplinary experts into play,  promote academic exchanges, continuing education, scientific research, transformation of results, popularization of science, free grassroots clinical treatment, standardized treatment and other work in the field of MDT for end-stage lung diseases, and around the goal  of “improving the patients’ quality of life, reducing their pain and suffering, and prolonging their survival cycle”, continuously improve the level of MDT for end-stage lung diseases across Sichuan province, so as to better serve patients with end-stage lung diseases.

Prof. Chen Jingyu expressed his warm congratulations on the establishment of the Special Committee on MDT for End-Stage Lung Diseases and Sichuan Lung Transplantation Alliance. He talked about the latest international progress in the field of lung transplantation, shared the advanced management experience of lung transplantation in Beijing region which also takes the lead in the international academic area, and analyzed the current situation and key issues of lung transplantation donors and recipients in China. He also discussed how to solve the dilemma of donor-recipient balance, and how to improve the donor utilization rate strategy, He pointed out the direction for the future high-quality development of lung transplantation, and called on the medical colleagues to focus on the core of "better benefiting the patients", learn from the domestic advanced experience and international frontiers, and work together with  multidisciplinary colleagues to make greater contributions to the health and well-being of patients with end-stage lung diseases!

During the academic session, the participants focused on the development and innovation of lung transplantation surgery technology in China, and made presentations on the perioperative management of lung transplantation in patients with pulmonary hypertension, the current situation of lung transplantation development in Guangdong Province, the development history of lung transplantation in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the progress of diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension, the progress of diagnosis and treatment of CTD-ILD, the selection of transplantation timing for end-stage lung diseases, the maintenance of donor lung, the development of lung transplantation in West China Hospital, etc., systematically reviewing the current situation of lung transplantation, summarizing the development history of lung transplantation, sharing the excellent treatment experience, discussing the hot and difficult issues in the diagnosis and treatment of end-stage lung diseases, and comprehensively demonstrating the new progress in the MDT for end-stage lung diseases.

The Special Committee on MDT for End-Stage Lung Diseases and Sichuan Lung Transplantation Alliance will focus on the core objectives of promoting collaboration, standardization and co-creation of medical services for end-stage lung diseases in Sichuan province to build a professional exchange platform, and innovate the whole-process management service model of end-stage lung diseases through various academic activities such as academic exchange, medical collaboration, technology promotion, standardization of procedures and popularization of science, so as to better serve patients and contribute more to a healthy Sichuan and healthy western China.
