SCIMEA Sets up the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

In recent years, the incidence of bone and soft tissue tumors has been increasing year by year, yet the treatment is complex, variable and partially irregular, which poses a great threat to people's lives and a great challenge to medical institutions at all levels. In order to further improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment in the field of bone and soft tissue tumors and promote academic exchange and cooperation, the inaugural meeting and the first academic conference of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors pf Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA) was successfully held in Chengdu on April 22, 2023.

The inaugural meeting was presided over by Prof. Min Li from the Department of Orthopedics of West China Hospital of Sichuan University. More than 150 experts attended this meeting, including Prof. Guo Wei from the Department of Bone Oncology, Peking University People's Hospital; Prof. Niu Xiaohui from the Department of Bone Oncology, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital (online); Prof. Shen Jingnan from the Department of Bone Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University; Prof. Li Jianmin from the Department of Bone Oncology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University; Prof. Shao Zengwu from the Department of Orthopedics, Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (online); Prof. Ye Zhaoming from the Department of Orthopedics, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine; Prof. Zhou Zongke, Prof. Tu Chongqi and Prof. Li Tao from the Department of Orthopedics, West China Hospital of Sichuan University; Prof. Zhang Hongying from the Department of Pathology, West China Hospital of Sichuan University; Prof. Jiang Yu from the Department of Medical Oncology, West China Hospital of Sichuan University; Prof. Xiao Jiwei from the Department of Orthopedics, Sichuan Cancer Hospital; Prof. Hao Peng from the Department of Orthopedics, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital; and Ms. Zhang Mengfan, Secretary General of SCIMEA.

The first item of the inaugural meeting was a preparatory work report by Prof. Tu Chongqi, one of the initiators of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of SCIMEA. Prof. Tu Chongqi noted, as a rare disease, the incidence of bone and soft tissue tumors is increasing year by year. The diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in Sichuan started late, and both the professional physicians and standardized treatment plan are scarce here. Although the 5-year survival rate of patients in Sichuan has been improved, there is still a big gap in terms of clinical diagnosis and treatment level compared with coastal cities. The Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors aims to establish a professional academic exchange platform, gather medical resources in the province, strengthen academic exchanges and discussions on rare diseases, promote standardized diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors, and provide patients with better medical services for the benefit of people's livelihood.

Later, Tong Yubo, Director of Academic Conference Affairs Department of SCIMEA, organized the election of the special committee and read out the results. And the leaders at all levels of the special committee were elected at the scene according to the election provisions in the Articles of Association of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association. As a result, Prof. Tu Chongqi was elected as chairman, 6 other experts including Prof. Min Li as vice chairmen, 19 other experts including Prof. Chen Ge and Prof. Huang Bo as members of the standing committee, 132 other experts including Prof. An Minghe and Prof. Cao Yun as members, as well as Prof. Lu Minxun and Prof. Tang Fan as secretaries.

Prof. Tu Chongqi, the newly-elected chairman, spoke on behalf of all the members of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors. Prof. Tu said that as a professional academic exchange platform, Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors is characterized by representativeness, academic significance and participation. The overall diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in Sichuan is relatively backward, so he hopes that the special committee can take advantage of its advantages and make efforts to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in Sichuan in the future.

Prof. Zhou Zongke, Director of the Department of Orthopedics, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, expressed his warm congratulations to the establishment of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors on behalf of his department. Prof. Zhou Zongke pointed out that the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors are difficult, the operation of some patients are complicated, and there are only a few standardized treatment teams with certain scale in Sichuan. He was very pleased today to witness more than one hundred orthopedic peers in the province join in the construction of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of SCIMEA. He also believed that under the organization of Prof. Tu Chongqi, Prof. Min Li and other experts, and with the joint efforts of all peers in the province, the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors in Sichuan will reach a new level.

Finally, on behalf of SCIMEA, Secretary General Zhang Mengfan expressed her warm congratulations on the establishment of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors and noted that, the special committee will build a professional academic platform for the practitioners in this field in Sichuan, which will help them discuss the latest progress and new achievements of this disease, help to further improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment level and scientific research ability, and help to promote the standardization and innovation of diagnosis and treatment model, with a final aim of safeguarding people's health.

After that, the Bone Tumor Session of the 17th International Orthopedics Forum of West China Hospital and the 1st Academic Meeting of the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of SCIMEA were held. The meeting was rich in content, covering 3D printing customized prosthesis, accelerated rehabilitation of bone tumors, tumor immunotherapy, tumor targeted therapy, tumor pathology and new concepts of diagnosis and treatment, etc., achieving the expected results.
