In order to build a platform and collaborative network for improving neurosurgery medical quality and establish a more sound mechanism for medical quality monitoring and improvement, the inaugural meeting of the Neurosurgery Branch of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), sponsored by SCIMEA, was successfully held on August 4, 2023 in Mianyang, Sichuan Province.

The first item of the inaugural meeting was a preparatory report by Prof. Zhou Liangxue, one of the initiators of the Neurosurgery Branch of SCIMEA. Prof. Zhou made a report on the purpose of launching the branch, the preparatory process, the distribution of members and other related contents. He said that there still exist various problems in the development of neurosurgery in our province, for example, some hospitals are unable to carry out routine neurosurgery due to the constraints of medical technology; some hospitals have not yet established neurosurgery as an independent department, which limits its development; there is a lack of effective communication platforms, which prevents the promotion and application of new neurosurgical techniques and concepts; and there is a lack of unified quality control standards, which makes it difficult for the quality of surgery to be homogenized, and so on. In order to solve the problems, it is necessary to set up a professional platform to train and improve the diagnosis and treatment level of medical institutions at all levels, promote the transformation of scientific research results, propel the progress of scientific research, discover the outstanding young talents, and help neurosurgery in our province to continue to progress in the direction of professional refinement, special treatment for special disease, multidisciplinary joint research, standardized medical treatment and surgical management, and so on.

Later, Mr. Tong Yubo, Director of Academic Conference Affairs Department of SCIMEA, organized the election of the branch and read out the results. And the leaders at all levels of the branch were elected at the scene according to the election provisions in the Articles of Association of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association. As a result, Prof. You Chao of West China Hospital of Sichuan University was elected as advisor, Prof. Xu Jianguo as the honorary president, Prof. Zhou Liangxue as president, 8 experts including Cheng Jingmin, Cui Wenyao, Fan Chaofeng, Liu Yi, Peng Jianhua, Wang Yuanchuan, Wu Bo, and Xia Xun as vice presidents, 33 experts including Chen Haifeng, Chen Jing, Ding Hao, Gu Yingjiang, Li Fangjia and Li Ningying as the members of the standing committee, and 105 experts including Cao Yi, Cao Youlin, Chen Fang, Chen Hui, Chen Shaobo, and Cheng Shuwen as the first members, as well as Liu Lunxin and Liu Xiaoyin as secretaries.

Prof. You Chao mentioned in his speech that the successful convening of the inaugural meeting of the Neurosurgery Branch of SCIMEA represents that the neurosurgery medicine in Sichuan will be on the next level in terms of academics, technology, and talent cultivation. He believed that the development and progress of a discipline cannot be separated from "joint communication" and "common support", but also from the long-term planning. What we need to do now is based on China, based on the world, to examine our own development with higher and farther vision. We must stand in the international perspective to seek breakthroughs in progress, and strive to achieve double satisfaction and a win-win situation for medical personnel and patients.

Prof. Xu Jianguo expressed his congratulations on the establishment of the Neurosurgery Branch and  hoped that in the future the Neurosurgery Branch would make use of the  SCIMEA platform to formulate medium- and long-term planning for academic activities, actively carry out basic education and training at grass-root level, promote the popularization of knowledge, cultivate excellent workers, achieve a win-win situation for both the organization and the talents, and promote the high-quality development of the field of neurosurgery in the province.

Prof. Zhou Liangxue, the new president of the branch, said in his speech that dreams achieve greatness, and every peer in the neurosurgery branch is an aspirant with dreams. He believed that under the guidance and leadership of Prof. You Chao and Prof. Xu Jianguo, and with the joint efforts of all of us, the branch will go further and further and stand higher and higher, and that going global" will no longer be just a phrase of hope and expectation.

Secretary General Zhang Mengfan expressed her warm congratulations on behalf of the SCIMEA on the official establishment of the Neurosurgery Branch. She said, combining the advantages and characteristics of the SCIMEA and the development needs of neurosurgery, the Neurosurgery Branch will focus on the promotion of four tasks, namely, “strengthening international exchange and cooperation”, “strengthening clinical scientific research”, “strengthening homogenization and continuing education” and “strengthening social science publicity”. It will promote academic exchanges, research, talent cultivation, and science education in the field of neurosurgery from both internal and external dimensions, so as to promote the innovative and high-quality development of neurosurgery medicine in Sichuan, bring good news to patients, and contribute to the construction of a Healthy Sichuan and a Healthy China!
