On July 23, 2022 West China Academic Conference on Perioperative Medicine and the Academic Annual Conference of the Specialized Committee of Anesthesiology of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association was grandly opened online. The conference was jointly sponsored by Anesthesia Surgery Center of West China Hospital of Sichuan University and Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), organized by the Specialized Committee of Anesthesiology of SCIMEA, and co-organized by the Department of Pain, Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Critical Care Medicine and Ambulatory Surgery Center of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, as well as the Department of Anesthesiology of West China Second University Hospital.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zhu Tao, Executive Chairman of the conference, Director of the Anesthesia Surgery Center of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and Chairman of the Specialized Committee of Anesthesiology of Sichuan Medical Association. In light of the current severe situation of epidemic prevention and control, this conference was temporarily adjusted to an online meeting, and we would like to express our sincere thanks and warm welcome to all the leaders, guests, delegates and medical colleagues who attended the conference online.

This conference will closely follow the academic themes of “perioperative medicine, visualization technology and artificial intelligence”, to exchange and discuss the latest progress of anesthesiology and basic clinical research, as well as the frontier and hot issues in clinical practice; it will further explore and innovate in organizational construction, academic exchange and personnel training, and promote the overall level of medical education and research in anesthesiology. This conference is a regional international event to showcase the hot spots of anesthesiology and reflect the highest academic level of anesthesia.

On behalf of the organizing committee, Prof. Liu Jin, Director of the Institute of Anesthesiology of Sichuan University, Director of the Anesthesia Surgery Center, Director of the Teaching and Research Section of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Director of the Translational Neuroscience Center of West China Hospital, and Chairman of the conference, expressed the warmest welcome to all the guests and colleagues who attended the conference online. He pointed out that the conference’s themes, namely, perioperative medicine, visualization technology and artificial intelligence represented the main interests of future development of anesthesiology, aiming to promote the balanced and high quality development of anesthesiology in China and to improve the treatment capability of anesthesiologists and nurses in all aspects. We will continue to adhere to the development concept of “being clinical-oriented and strengthening the discipline with teaching and research”, and continuously promote the planning and construction of the discipline; adhere to a people’s health-centered approach, train more excellent anesthesia talents with international competitiveness, and contribute West China Hospital’s efforts to improving the anesthesia discipline nationwide.

In her opening speech, Secretary General Zhang Mengfan of SCIMEA sincerely thanked the experts and related organizations for their support to the convening of the conference. She said that the West China Academic Conference on Perioperative Medicine has been successfully held for 11 sessions and has gradually become a branded academic event with international influence. In recent years, SCIMEA has also been improving its professional academic service capacity, and has established a first-class international medical exchange platform in western China which features rich international medical academic resources and journal resources. SCIMEA will give full play to the advantages of the professional industry platform and do its best to work together with fellow anesthesiologists to jointly promote the anesthesiology and perioperative medicine to score new achievements and contribute more to the construction of a healthy Sichuan and a healthy China.

Prof. Liu Lunxu, Executive Vice President of West China School of Medicine/West China Hospital, Sichuan University, expressed his gratitude to the leaders and experts for their long-term support to the development of anesthesia in West China Hospital. West China Hospital’s anesthesia has been ranked first in the national reputation ranking of anesthesia specialty by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University for 12 consecutive years, and is one of the disciplines that best represents and highlights West China Hospital. The development from anesthesiology to perioperative medicine is not only the general trend of anesthesiology, but also the sublimation of its fundamental value again, and the development of anesthesiology will help improve the diagnosis and treatment ability and level of other clinical specialties, while playing an important role in the development of hospitals. He said that 2022 is the key year of deepening the reform of medical and health system and promoting the high-quality development of public hospitals, and it is also the glorious moment of the 130th anniversary of the founding of West China Hospital. The hospital, with the goal of “rooting in western China, strengthening the characteristics, leading in innovation, and being world-class", strives to achieve a new leap from “following” to “leading”. He hoped that with the joint efforts of all of us, the anesthesia and other superior disciplines of West China Hospital will keep up with the frontier of discipline development, explore the unknown areas of discipline development, and occupy the world’s center of discipline development. He also hoped West China Hospital will seize every minute to earnestly implement the “Healthy China” Strategy, accelerate the implementation of the “Healthy Sichuan” Action, and write a new chapter of West China Hospital the safeguarding people’s health!

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Zuo Zhiyi from the University of Virginia, Prof. Liu Jin from the Anesthesia Surgery Center of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, and Prof. Daniel Sessler from Cleveland Clinic, USA were invited to share their presentations respectively on the themes of “Anesthesiologists as Perioperative Physicians: Focus on Achieving Better Outcome”, “The Connotation and Core Knowledge Technology of Clinical Anesthesia”, and “Clinical Trials”.

After the presentations, seven sub-forums on pain management, specialty care, perioperative diagnosis and treatment (West China Hospital-St. Louis session), perioperative ultrasound application, ambulatory surgery & endoscopic care anesthesia, West China Hospital’s anesthesia case discussion, and the 9th Asian Anesthesia Summit were held simultaneously. We will take this conference as an opportunity to widely connect experts and scholars in the field of anesthesia at home and abroad, follow the frontiers of international anesthesiology, accelerate the development of the discipline of anesthesia, jointly discuss the latest applications of visualization technology and artificial intelligence in perioperative medicine, jointly explore the future development of perioperative medicine, and contribute to the realization of the Health China 2030 plan and safeguarding of people's life and health with the wisdom of West China Hospital.
