SCIMEA Sets up the Special Committee on Osteoporosis

In order to further strengthen the exchange and cooperation in the field of osteoporosis in and outside Sichuan province, and improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and relevant scientific research collaboration, the Special Committee on Osteoporosis of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA) was formally established in Chengdu on October 16, 2022, and its first international academic conference was held a combination of online and offline methods at the same time.

Unfortunately, due to the epidemic prevention and control, Prof. Zhang Zhenlin from the Sixth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Xie Zhongjian from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Prof. Yue Hua from the Sixth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. He Chengqi from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University and other advisors and some members of the committee were unable to attend the meeting in person, but they participated in the inaugural meeting online.

The first item of the inaugural meeting was a preparatory report by Prof. Yu Xijie, one of the initiators of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis of SCIMEA. Prof. Yu Xijie noted that although the preparation of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis was repeatedly affected by the pandemic, the first candidate members of the committee were finally selected out after careful recommendation and review by experts of the preparatory group. This year's candidate members were characterized by wide geographical coverage, high quality, and multidisciplinary background. Prof. Yu Xijie hoped that with the joint efforts of all members, the committee will move forward to become the most authoritative, innovative and leading academic organization in western China.
Later, Mr. Tong Yubo, Director of Academic Conference Affairs Department of SCIMEA, organized the election of the committee and read out the results. And the leaders at all levels of the committee were elected at the scene according to the election provisions in the Articles of Association of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association. As a result, 6 experts including Prof. He Chengqi were elected as advisor of the committee, Prof. Yu Xijie as chairman, 12 experts including Cao Hongyi as deputy chairmen, 47 experts including Chen Ya and Dang Wantai as members of the standing committee, 208 experts including Chang Jihui and Chen Daoyu as members, and Lu Lingyun and Xie Ying as secretaries.

Prof. Yu Xijie, the newly-elected chairman of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis, addressed the conference on behalf of all members of the committee. Prof. Yu Xijie expressed his sincere thanks to SCIMEA, the experts of the preparatory group, and the experts and colleagues who attended the meeting online and offline, and said that the establishment of the committee coincided with the 20th National Congress of the CPC and would focus on academic exchange, multidisciplinary cooperation and research on rare bone diseases, uniting and leading practitioners in relevant fields of osteoporosis to contribute to the development and growth of osteoporosis discipline in western China.

Secretary General Zhang Mengfan of SCIMEA warmly congratulated on the establishment of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis. According to Ms. Zhang, SCIMEA, as a 5A social organization in Sichuan, has unique advantages in academic exchange, international cooperation, scientific research journals, industrial transformation and popularization of science, and will work together with all members of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis to promote the continuous improvement of the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in western China.

Prof. Luo Fengming warmly congratulated on the establishment of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis on behalf of West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Prof. Luo indicated that as China’s population continues to age, osteoporosis and fragility fractures have become a serious social and economic threat to the health of middle-aged and elderly people. Moreover, the public awareness rate, treatment rate and control rate of osteoporosis are still low, and there is an urgent need to strengthen clinical effort and regional collaboration in this field. He hoped that relying on the special committee and academic exchanges, under the leadership of Chairman Yu Xijie, the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in Sichuan province can be promoted and the “three rates” of osteoporosis improved.

Prof. He Chengqi expressed his hope that the Special Committee on Osteoporosis, under the leadership of Prof. Yu Xijie, will unite outstanding scholars and medical personnel, play a backbone role in the field of osteoporosis technology through the platform of the committee, actively develop osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment strategies in Sichuan, standardize treatment pathways, establish the whole course of osteoporosis management system, continuously improve the public’s awareness of osteoporosis and prevention awareness, and contribute to the protection of people’s health.

Prof. Zhang Zhenlin warmly congratulated the establishment of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis and the first international academic conference. Prof. Zhang Zhenlin noted that the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis involves multi-disciplinary, multi-level and multi-dimensional collaboration, from surgery to internal medicine, from Western medicine to traditional Chinese medicine, from basic research to clinical translation, and only with the concerted efforts and mutual cooperation of people in osteoporosis-related fields can we promote the development and growth of osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

After the inaugural meeting, the first international academic conference of the Special Committee on Osteoporosis was successfully held, in which domestic and overseas famous experts and professors from Japan, the United States, Australia, etc. jointly gave lectures and conducted seminars on the frontier hot issues in the field of osteoporosis.
