In order to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment in the field of gastrointestinal surgery and minimally invasive surgery, promote standardized treatment in the field of gastrointestinal surgery, advance the homogeneous development of gastrointestinal surgery, and strengthen the exchange and cooperation at home and abroad in this field, the 3rd “West China’s Way” Gastrointestinal Surgery Forum (Meishan) and the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Special Committee on Gastrointestinal Surgery of SCIMEA, sponsored by Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), and jointly organized by the Special Committee on Gastrointestinal Surgery of SCIMEA, West China Hospital of Sichuan University and Meishan People's Hospital, was successfully held in Meishan from June 9 to 10, 2023. The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yang Lie, Director of Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of West China Hospital of Sichuan University. A book donation session was specially arranged during this meeting. The book donated is tilted Surgery, a national planning textbook for “14th five year plan”, co-edited by Prof. Zhou Zongguang and Academician Zhao Yupei. It is the result of Prof. Zhou's years of teaching experience and his efforts to keep up with the times. “Donating a masterpiece with profound ideas to express friendly sentiments.” As Prof. Zhou Zongguang is concerned about the development of discipline construction in Meishan, he proposed to donate this masterpiece to the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of Meishan People's Hospital. Prof. Shanu Kothari, University of Southern California School of Medicine, Greenville, USA, presents a lecture titled “Ushering in a New Era: The 2022 ASMBS/IFSO Guidelines for Indications for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery” online.

At the same time, the forum invited a number of experts from inside and outside Sichuan Province to discuss and exchange experiences on gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, abdominal wall hernia, weight loss and metabolism.

The first item of the enlarged plenary meeting was a speech by Prof. Zhou Zongguang, Honorary Chairman of the Special Committee on Gastrointestinal Surgery of SCIMEA. Prof. Zhou said that the Special Committee on Gastrointestinal Surgery has only been established for one year, but its scale is getting bigger, its influence is getting wider, its coverage is getting richer. The committee is promoting the development of gastrointestinal surgery across the whole Sichuan, providing better medical services for patients and benefiting people's livelihood.

The second item of the enlarged plenary meeting was a work summary by Prof. Yang Lie, Chairman of the Special Committee on Gastrointestinal Surgery of SCIMEA. Prof. Yang organized the work for the whole year of the committee with the actual situation and reasonably planned the work goals for the next year.

In order to unite more gastrointestinal surgery peers, build a broader academic exchange platform, and promote the high-quality and homogeneous development of gastrointestinal surgery in Sichuan, the committee decided to expand the academic structure of the committee and add new members through recommendation, self-recommendation and nomination, and at the same time reporting to the Secretariat of SCIMEA for review and the committee for deliberation. The enlarged plenary meeting was presided over by Director Tong Yubo of SCIMEA and he then announced the election results. The new members of the standing committee, members and secretaries were elected on the spot, and awarded certificates.
